Park Operations Section Revitalized

On December 7, 2007 the State Board of Directors appointed a new Board of Directors for the Park Operations Section. In appointing the Section Board, CPRS hopes to revitalize the Park Operations Section through new blood and ideas. CPRS also hopes to reinvent the Section by widening the scope of the professional development activities it supports. Membership is encouraged for parks professionals who are responsible for not only managing and operating parks & open space, but also major facilities such as community centers & swimming pools. The scope of the Section is being expanded to include park planning and development. The Section will now represent public and private sector professionals such as landscape architects, park planners, construction managers and other professionals not currently represented by a CPRS Section.

The appointed Section officers will serve until March 2009, when a new Board will be elected by the Section membership. The new Park Operations Section has already begun working on goals & objectives, committee assignments and a work plan for the coming year. The initial goals for the Section are:

  1. Correspond with current section membership and potential new members about change and direction of section
  2. Develop membership campaign to current and potential members to grow the section
    a. Coordinate information with districts and regions regarding activities of interest to section and benefits of membership
  3. Develop slate of officers for new Board for 2009 election
    a. Submit to membership for vote; install at 2009 conference
  4. Develop and present one statewide education/training program for the section including a networking opportunity
  5. Participate in conference planning for 2009
    a. Develop at least six sessions for submittal to the conference program
    committee
  6. Review and recommend changes to bylaws as appropriate and necessary for the long term success of the section
  7. Identify possible partner organizations to the Section and extend initial outreach to those organizations
  8. Set preliminary/draft work plan for 09/10 year for new board and provide orientation and transition plan to new board

Members of the Park Operations Section are encouraged to contact the Section Board of Directors and to get involved in the activities and programs in support of professionals working in park development, management and operations.
